Glass and Traditional Glazing Systems (23) Flashcards
What is glass made of?
Glass is made up of oxygen and sand, which are heated, mixed, and then cooled to form glass.
Why is glass used as a finish in construction?
Glass is strong by weight but not as stiff in bending, making it more suitable as a finish rather than a structural material. It allows portions of a weatherproof enclosure to be open to light and views.
What are Insulated Glass Units (IGUs)?
IGUs are standard for exterior-facing windows, consisting of multiple panes separated by a gap, sometimes filled with gases to limit heat transmission via convection.
What is annealed glass?
Annealed glass (traditional glass) is cooled very slowly and evenly to avoid internal stresses.
What is tempered glass?
Tempered glass is heat-treated to make it much stronger than annealed glass, causing it to “explode” into small granules when broken, making it useful as safety glass.
What is laminated glass?
Laminated glass consists of films applied to one side of single-pane glass or sandwiched between multiple panes to protect them from damage. A common type uses a single layer of PVB film.
What are Low-Emissivity (Low-E) coatings?
Low-E coatings are special reflective coatings that reflect a significant amount of the sun’s energy while allowing high visibility through the glass.
What is glazing?
Glazing refers to the glass used in windows. The tradesperson who installs it is called a glazier.
What are mullions and muntin’s?
Mullions are large members that support the majority of the glass load and stiffen the assembly, while muntin’s are smaller elements that join smaller panes of glass and provide some stiffening.
What is a rough opening in window installation?
A rough opening is the opening in a wall where a window is installed. The window is slightly smaller than the rough opening, allowing room for shims to set the window plumb and level.
What is a lintel in water management around windows?
A lintel projects water away from the face of the wall above a window, providing a drip edge to keep water off the window.
