- Eyes - 4 points
- Voice - 5 points

A
- No response to pain
- Eyes open only to pain
- Eyes open to voice command/shouting
- Eyes open spontaneously

Break down the voice component
A
- No verbal response
- Imcomprehensible speech/sounds
- Words discernible but inappropriate response
- Confused, able to asnwer questions
- Oritented in self, space and time

Break down the motor compartment
A
- No motor response
- Extends limbs in response to pain (decerebrate)
- Flexes limbs in response to pain (decorticate)
- Withdraws from pain (pressing on nail)
- Localises the pain (moves hand towards painful stimulus)
- Obeys commands

Interpret GCS score thresholds
A
- < 8 severe brain injury
- 9-13 moderate brain injury
- 14 may not indicate brain injury
- 15 is the BEST RESPONSE
