glands - endocrine system Flashcards
pituitary gland
the “master gland’ exerts control over all other glands
found in the
head
secretes hormones that influence
growth - somatotrophin
reproduction - FSH LH PRoclatin, Oxytocin
Skin pigmentation MSH ACTH
urination ADH
Thyroid is located
in the throat
thyroid
alters metabolic rates and Ca levels
Iodine is an essential element
hypothyroidism
lower production of T4 and T3 hormones = decreased metabolic rate
lethargy, weight gain, poor coat
hyperthyroidism
increased production of the thyroxine = metabolic rate
increased appetite, weightloss, PU/PD, V/D
PTH
Parathyroid hormone
parathyroid gland
regulates Ca and P levels in bone and blood
important in blood formation, clotting, and brain function
balance actions of thyroid glands
hyperparathyroidism
removes Ca from the bones
treatment is usually surgical
adrenal clans located
on kidneys
adrenal gland function
produces
mineralocoriticoids - regulate Na+ and K+ levels
Glucorticoids (cortisol) metabolism, resistance to stress, and recovery from injury and inflammation
secondary sex characteristics
cushing’s disease
hyperdrenocorticism
symptoms: increased appetite, PU/PD, lethargy, poor hair coat
causes: Pituitary or adrenal tumors, prolonged use of steroids
addisions disease
Hypoadrenocorticism – decreased production of cortisol and aldosterone
Symptoms: Intermittent lethargy, V/D, PU/PD, weight loss
Causes: Immune-mediated, trauma, Pituitary or Adrenal tumors, prolonged use of steroids
ACTH stimulation blood test
can be used to diagnose cushings or addisons disease
