Where are the thyroid glands?
Thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and is located in the center of your neck, below your thyroid cartilage and above the notch of your breastbone.
What would nodes/swelling in the thyroid gland indicate?
Commonly observed in thyroid disorders
Iodine deficiency
Malignancy
Where are the salivary glands?
3 sets of glands;
The parotid - situated one each side of the face just below the external acoustic meatus
The submandibular - one each side of the face under the angle of the jaw
The sublingual - floor of the mouth
What would nodes/swelling in the salivary gland indicate?
MUMPS!
What would nodes/swelling in the occipital lymph nodes indicate?
Enlarged with scalp lesions
Rubella
Where are the posterior auricular lymph nodes located?
Superficial to the mastoid process (behind the ear)
What would nodes/swelling in the posterior auricular lymph nodes indicate?
Enlarged with upper respiratory, scalp, ear infections
Where are the occipital lymph nodes located?
Palpate from front, at the base of the skull
Where are the pre-auricular lymph nodes located?
In front of the ear
What would nodes/swelling in the pre-auricular lymph nodes indicate?
infections of the eye-lids, conjunctiva, temporal scalp
Where are the tonsillar lymph nodes located?
At the angle of the jaw, bilateral
What would nodes/swelling in the tonsillar lymph nodes indicate?
Tonsilitis
Where are the submandibular lymph nodes located?
Midway between the angle and tip of the mandible
What would nodes/swelling in the submandibular lymph nodes indicate?
Infections of the lips, mouth, conjunctiva
Where are the supraclavicular lymph nodes located?
In the angle formed by clavicle and sternomastoid
