9
Q

What is colloid (in the thyroid gland) and what is its function?

A

Colloid consist of a gel-like, pinkish material mainly consisting of thyroglobin. Thyroid hormones are stored extracellularly as part of the thyroglobin.

Q

What is the function of parafollicular cells in the thyroid gland?

A

Parafollicular cells secrete calcitonin which lowers the level of calcium ions in the blood .

13
Q

What does the parathyroid gland secrete and what is its function?

A

Parathyroid hormone which stimulates osteoclasts to mobilize bone and increase the level of calcium in the blood. PTH also increases calcium cation reabsorption in the kidney and decreases reabsorption of phosphate ions.

16
Q

What is the posterior pituitary made of?

A

The posterior pituitary is formed from neural ectoderm from the base of the diencephalon which forms the infundibulum.

17
Q

What is a chromophile?

A

A tissue that stains readily.

18
Q

What color do acidophiles stain?

A

Red

19
Q

What color do basophiles stain?

A

Blue or purple

20
Q

What is a chromophobe?

A

A tissue that does not take up a stain or appears unstained or clear.

21
Q

What do somatotrophs of the anterior pituitary secrete and what is its function?

A

Growth hormone (GH) which affects many cells.

22
Q

What do mammotrophs of the anterior pituitary secrete and what is its function?

A

Prolactin which controls milk production during lactation.

23
Q

What do corticotrophs of the anterior pituitary secrete and what is its function?

A

Adenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) which controls secretion of cortisol by cells in the adrenal cortex.

24
Q

What do thyrotrophs of the anterior pituitary secrete and what is its function?

A

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which controls secretion of thyroid hormone.

25
Q

What do gonadotrophs of the anterior pituitary secrete and what is its function?

A

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Lutenizing hormone (LH) which control development of follicles and ovulation in the ovary.
