GLANDS Flashcards
Pineal Gland
The pineal gland secretes, the hormone melatonin that influences the sleep – wakefulness portion of the circadian cycle.
Thymus
The thymus gland secretes a hormone that functions as a part of the immune system to help the bodies immune response before birth and into childhood. After puberty, it slowly turns into fatty tissue. The sinus gland is secretes the hormone thymosin.
Ovary
In the female, the ovaries shelter and protect the eggs that the female is born with until they are ready for use. Ovaries also produce female, reproductive, hormones, estrogen and progesterone, as well as other hormones, relaxing, and inhibin.
Testicle
In the mail, the testes are important for the production and storage of the sperm, until they are mature enough for ejaculation. They also produce the endocrine hormone, testosterone. Just a strong is responsible for the male sex drive, for fertility, for puberty, and for the development of muscle and bone mass.
Placenta
The main function of the placenta is to provide oxygen and nutrients from the mothers blood to the growing baby and to remove the waste products from the babies blood.
Adrenal glands
The main function of the adrenal glands is to control the electrolyte levels in the body. Electrolytes are minerals, such as calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. They also help regulate metabolism in the body’s response to stress.
Adrenal cortex
The adrenal cortex, secretes, androgens, which are sex hormones. It also secretes corticosteroids, which are steroid hormones. Aldosterone, regulates, sodium and water levels in the body. Cortisol performs anti-inflammatory functions and helps to regulate metabolism of carbohydrates, bats, and proteins.
Pancreas
The pancreas functions both in the endocrine system, and the digestive system. As an endocrine function, the pancreas works to control blood glucose levels and glucose metabolism.
Glucagon
The pancreas secretes glucagon, which is a hormone that responds to low levels of glucose in the blood. It increases the glucose level by stimulating the liver to convert glycogen into glucose.
Insulin
The pancreas also secretes the hormone insulin.
Thyroid
The tundra gland regulates the body’s metabolism through the secretion of thyroxine, and triodothyronine.
Parathyroid glands
The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone, which works with calcitonin to regulate calcium levels in the blood. I am in. L
