Glaciers Flashcards
Moraines
Glacial deposits/accumulations (lateral, recessional, ground, terminal, end, and medial)
Alpine Glacier
Glacier in mountainous regions (high altitudes) & carve glacial valleys (U-shaped)
Tarns
Small lakes formed in cirques; AKA Basin Lakes; form at base of cirques
Continental Glacier
Large continent is covered by ice sheet (large coverage); HIGH Latitude
Cirque
Bowl-shaped depression; found at head of valley; due to glacial erosion
Col
Mountain pass/lowest point; created by erosion of cirques
Arete
Sharp ridge between 2 glacial valleys
Horn
Sharp peak; created by merging cirques; have flat faces and pyramid shaped
Roche Mountonee
Rounded knobs of rock; “grazing sheep”
Pater Noster Lakes
Series of lakes or tarns in glacial valley
Drumlin
Streamed-lined hills of till that are formed under glacier
Kame
Mounds of glacial sediment; basically a sand/gravel hill near glacier; found with kettle topography
Kettle
Lake or depression formed by melted ice from glacier; found with kame topography
Ogives
Compression or pressure ridges; steep changes in topography (icefall)
