Glaciers Flashcards
What is an erratic
A rock that differs from the surrounding rock and was transported by ice over a long distance and deposited by a melting glacier
What is a drumlin
An egg-shaped formation made it till, formed by ground moraine depositing beneath the glacier
What is a moraine?
Unsorted till that’s been deposited by a glacier (particular places for the different moraines)
Ground moraine?
Material dragged under the base of the glacier and deposited over a wide area on the valley floor
Medial moraine?
Caused by the lateral moraines of two glaciers when they meet
Terminal moraine?
A ridge of moraine that marks the furthest extent of the glacier
Recessional ?
A ridge of moraine marking a temporary halt in the general retreat of a glacier
Lateral moraine?
Ridge of till that builds up at the edge of a glacier and is usually made up of weathered material from the valley sides that has fallen on the glacier
What is zone of accumulation?
Part of the glacier where snow falls and is compacted, creating glacial ice, and is found at high altitudes
What is zone of ablation?
The part of the glacier where glacial ice melts, found at low altitudes
