Glaciers Flashcards
What is a glacier
A large mass often shaped like a river that flows very slowly
What is an ice sheet
A thick Layer of ice that covers more than 50,000 sq km
How are glaciers formed?
Snow builds up and compresses the lower snow to ice
Erosion definition
The wearing away of land
What is weathering?
When rock or ice is exposed to weather conditions, which cause it to change
How many glacial processes are there?
3
What are the three glacier processes?
Plucking, abrasion, Freeze thaw
What is plucking?
When a Glacier moves down a hill, it plucks the rocks and trees out the ground
What is abrasion?
As the glacier moves downhill the rocks get scratched across and where to land down and causing striations
What is freeze thaw?
When water in cracks freezes and expands the crack
The eroding, ice, carves out, steep mountainside
Arête
A sharp edged mountain peak
Pyramid peak
How deep depression on a hillside or mountain with a steep back wall
Corrrie
Play Heal melt water
Tarn
Wide u shaped and usually a river flows through the bottom
U-shaped valley
What is transportation?
The moving or carrying something for example, a glacier can carry rocks
Super glacial transportation
Sediment transport on top of the glacier
Englacial transportation
Sediment is transported in the glacier
Subglacial transportation
Sediment is transported on the bed of the glacier
What is a hazard?
When your in danger
What is a resource?
Something we can get from a glacier that benefits us
What is an avalanche?
An avalanche is a sudden and fast flow to snow, sliding down a mountain
How can avalanches be prevented?
Explosion bombardment, building regulations, shipping forecast, snow fence and shed, aforestation
