Glacier Definitions Flashcards
Abrasion
Erosion caused by rocks and boulders in the base of a glacier acting like a giant file
Arete
A sharp knife like ridge between two corries
Bulldozing
Ice pushes material forwards
Conservation
Managing the environment to preserve, protect or restore it
Corrie
Armchair shaped hollow in the mountain
Drumlin
A hill made of glacial till deposited by a moving glacier
Erratics
Rocks which have been transported some distance from their original position by a glacier
Freeze thaw weathering
Water getting into cracks in rocks, then freezing overnight, breaking off a piece of rock.
Glacial trough
River valley made from a “V” shape to a “U” shape by erosion of a glacier.
Hanging Valley
Tributary valley to the main glacier. Too high and cold for ice to be able to easily move. It is therefore less eroded.
Land use conflicts
Arguments over who owns and can use land
Moraine
Frost shattered rock debris moved by glaciers
Outwash
Material like sand or gravel deposited by meltwater streams underneath a glacier
Plucking
Meltwater freezes to the glacier and then slides away taking little bits of the glacier away.
Pyramidal Peak
Where several corries cut back and meet at one point to make a ridge
