Glaciation Flashcards
What is glaciation
The process or state of being covered by ice glaciers or sheets of ice
What is an ice age
A long period of time when the earths temperature drops
What causes an ice age
Expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and glaciers
What is an interglacial period
A warmer period of time that are often thousands of years long
What’s an ice sheet
A chunk of ice that covers land surrounding wider than 50,000km
What is an ice cap
A covering of ice over a large area. Less wide than 50,000. Normally feeds into glaciers
What are glaciers
Slow moving masses or river of ice formed by accumulation
What is a glacier system?
All glaciers have: an input, a store, a transfer and an output
What is accumulation
Exceed outputs near head of glacier
What is ablation
Outputs exceed inputs, lower glacier
Where is the snout of the glacier
At the front of it
What is moraine
The snout pushes huge amounts of material in front
What is a Corrie
A deep bowl shapes landform
What is plucking
Material pulled out of the ground when ice freezes to them
What is TERMINAL moraine
Material pushed in front of glacier
