Glacial Landscapes Flashcards
Freeze thaw weathering
Rainfall enters crack in rock
Freezes overnight and expands
Melts during day then freezes overnight
Repeats over long period of time until rock breaks away
Plucking
As the glacier moves past the rocks, the meltwater envelops them and freezes, breaking them away from the cliffside
Abrasion
As the glacier moves downhill, it grinds the rocks and sediment it has been carrying along the bottom of the valley, and removes the top layer of the ground over time
Rotational slip
The glacier moves out of the hollow in a circular motion, creating a corrie, which fills with water and becomes a tarn
Bulldozing
The glacier push piles of rock in front of it, which is called a moraine
How far a glacier has moved is shown by a terminal moraine (a moraine at the end of a glacier)
Deposition
Sediment is dumped on the ground to form a deposit called till. It is poorly sorted
Meltwater pouring out from the front of the glacier will carry small till away and form a vast outwash plain
