Globalization according to John Tomlinson
Collective condition of «complex connectivity» on a global scale. Refers to the rapidly developing and ever-densening network of interconnections and interdependencies that characterize modern social life. 1999
the broad task of globalization theory
- understand the sources of this condition of complex connectivity
- interpret its implications across the various spheres of social existence

Countries, Regions, Companies …
Complexity = dynamic processes
- rescaling
- pushing, pulling, squeezing
- extensive / intensive
Eriksen refers to them as «runaway processes» «treadmill syndromes» «double binds»
Scale according to Eriksen
Combination of size and complexity : the larger we go up in scale, the more complex are social organizations
Pushing
Forces pull downwards on local communities ( Human Rights )
Pulling
Forces pull upwards from local communities : taking power from a city to a nation-state
Squeeze
Taking things and squeezing them into different spaces that didn’t exist before (EU, ASEAN…)
Extensive globalization
Cover lots of countries (2008 crisis) and reaching many sectors
Intensive Globalization
Depth in 1 place, large number of people / deep structures
