Girls Flashcards
Tell me about yourself

- extensive English teaching experience, very confident in the classroom
- cross country is passion, would love to contribute to sports program alongside academics
Can you tell me about a time you failed?
- reading comprehension tutoring: planned a lesson centred around analysing a short story. I was excited to dive into character motivations and themes
- underestimated student’s abilities, had difficulties with basic compr skills
- kept going with plan but student got disengaged, confused, frustrated
- what I learnt: to always be adaptable
If I walked into your classroom during an outstanding lesson, what would I see and hear?
lesson would be characterised by student autonomy, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose
- working in groups discussing themes/character motivations
- I am circulating around the room, asking open-ended questions to challenge their ideas and encouraging them to dig deeper into the text
INCLUSIVE DIALOGUE - EVERY VOICE IS VALUED
Tell me about a lesson that didn’t go well and what you did about it
Teaching Year 7 poetry (small grp tutoring class)
- class restless/distracted/constantly talking
- decided to incorporate more interactive and creative approaches. I introduced a ‘poetry slam’ (from POV of duchess in my last duchess)
- ‘talking stick’ method
Talk to me about a current issue in education
- widening gap in educational equity
- esp with COVID-19 and access to technologies
- I make it a point in my classroom to differentiate instruction, use free and accessible resources, and provide additional support to students who may struggle due to these inequities
What behaviour management strategies do you tend to employ in the classroom?
- clear class rules and routines: no talking when teacher is talking, first ten minutes quiet reading time (esp works after lunch)
- I often use non-verbal cues, such as hand signals or specific gestures, to redirect student attention or signal when it’s time to refocus
- ‘talking stick’ method
Give me an example of a classroom situation where the children have been challenging – what did you do to overcome this?
Teaching Year 7 poetry (small grp tutoring class)
- class restless/distracted/constantly talking
- decided to incorporate more interactive and creative approaches. I introduced a ‘poetry slam’

How do you leverage technology in education?
Highly proficient with Google Classroom, Kahoot, Menti for student engagement, finding videos and podcasts to supplement traditional texts and increase engagement
Why do you want to teach at this school?
- Experience in girls’ education (see myself in the long term really engaging in this sector of education)
- Presentation of Tangara as a family
- Fortitude (value) resilience and perseverance in the pursuit of what is good (reflects ‘Faith with Fortitude’)
- REAL program: I admire how this program fosters the love for an authentic, ‘real’ character, rather than the superficial images often promoted to girls by the media and society
Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
In 5 to 10 years, I see myself continuing to grow as an educator, with a focus on both personal and professional development.
- attending workshops
- perhaps even completing a masters degree in education
- being known as a well-rounded, impactful educator who not only influences the students in my classroom but also contributes to the broader school community
What is your teaching philosophy?
- growth mindset and engagement
- creating an engaging and dynamic classroom atmosphere where students are motivated to push their boundaries, take risks, and learn from mistakes
- My teaching philosophy is to make the content I teach more relatable. In many cases, when a student can’t identify with the material, it is harder for them to gather meaning.
How do you approach lesson planning?
- as a tutor, I link my lessons to the syllabus by studying it very closely
- assess students abilities and needs and plan accordingly (based on formative assessments, etc)
- design engaging activities: interactive discussions, group work, multimedia resources, and hands-on activities
How do you accommodate different learning styles in your classroom?
differentiate instruction, dynamic learning environ
e.g. when studying a novel - combine a video adaptation, group discussions, and creative projects where students can physically create or act out scenes from the text
How do you cope with stress?
- organisation and prioritisation (tiered todo list)
- physical activity: distance running
- journalling, constantly reflecting on my teaching practice

- public speaking (I run ps at bhnps, full marks all hghs oral presentations, drama 3rd in sydney drama eisteddfod)
- cross country, running club (represented north west metropolitan girls at the sydney north xc)
