Gingevectomy and Gingivoplasty Flashcards
Gingivectomy Definition
Excision of the soft tissue wall of a periodontal pocket that heals in a way to expose more tooth structure and cause a smaller pocket depth
What are the indications for a Gingivectomy?
Elimination of hyperplastic tissue (enlarged gingiva)
Elimination of suprabony pockets (base of the pocket is above the bone)
Elimination of a suprabony perio abscess
What are the contraindications for a Gingivectomy?
Osseous involvement:
- Sig bone loss or defects
- Pocket goes past the bone
Mucogingival involvement
- can probe past the MGJ
- very little keratinized gingiva
Furcaiton involvment
Gingivectomy Technique
Make a bleeding point reference
Externally beveled incision to the bleeding point
Incision starts external and apical
Gingivoplasty Definition
Reshaping of the gingiva to create physiologic gingival contours
Gingivosplasty Contraindicaitons
Typically, this procedure is not utilized at sites with periodontal pockets
Gingivosplasty Indications
Elimiate thick gingiva
What type of healing is associated with Gingivectomy?
Secondary Intention
Describe the Secondary Intention healing associated with a Gingivectomy
Clot forms
Clot is replaced by granulation tissue
Surface epithelialization occurs over a course of 5-14 days
Complete epithelial repair requires 4 weeks
Complete CT repair requires about 7 weeks
