What is the definition of being Gilick competent?
Child under the age of 16 who is able to consent to his or her medical treatment without the involvement of the parents
What are the Fraser guidelines?
Used to determine if a child is Gilick competent: (all must be fulfilled)
o He/she has sufficient maturity and intelligence to understand the nature and implications of the proposed treatment
o He/she cannot be persuaded to tell her parents or to allow the doctor to tell them
o He/she is very likely to begin or continue having sexual intercourse with or without contraceptive treatment
o His/her physical or mental health is likely to suffer unless he/she received the advice or treatment
o The advice or treatment is in the young person’s best interests
