Populism
a social movement that turned political with Farmers’ Alliances. A movement representing the interests of the average worker or farmer.
civil service reform
federal law, enacted in 1883, which established that positions within the federal government should be awarded on the basis of merit instead of political affiliation.
cultural assimilation
the process by which a person or a group’s language and/or culture come to resemble those of another group.
political machine
group in which an authoritative boss or small group commands the support of many supporters and businesses (usually campaign workers), who receive rewards for their efforts.
corruption
dishonest conduct by those in power, typically to unfairly benefit the powerful
