Gigachad Design Flashcards
What two stages does a product go through at the idea conceptualization to the finished product
The design process (CAD)/The manufacturing process (CAM)
What is the design process
Define problem -> Brainstorm -> Reasearch and generate ideas -> Identify criteria and constraints -> Select an Approach -> Develop a Design proposal -> Make a Model or prototype -> Test and Evaluate -> Refine the Design -> Create the solution -> Get feedback
How to research and generate ideas?
Conduct interviews with stakeholders or experts, research solutions that already exist and identify shortcomings and reasons why they are not apporpriate, compile the ideas
Criteria vs Constraints
Constraint is budged, volume, weight.
Criteria is flexibility, durability, eviormental friendliness
Model vs prototype
A model helps to communicate the idea through shape form fit or texture and a prototype can be tested
What does CAD include
CAD includes
any techniques that use
computers in the design
process, including:
drafting, stress analysis
and motion analysis.
What does a CAD model contain?
All design information: geometry dimesnsions, tolerances, materials and manufacturing info - they replace drawings
Why would you CAD?
Neat, clean, presentable, easy to modify, can be animated and computationally analysed
What are some of the important capabilities of using CAD?
1) Presentations
2) Flexibility in editing
3) Units and accuracy level
4) Storage and access of drawings
5) Sharing CAD drawings
6) Project reporting
7) Engineering analysis
8) Computer aided manufacturing (CAM)
What are the three cad models and what are their differences
Wireframe uses lines or splines to represent the edges of the part being modeled
A surface model defines an object in terms of surfaces such as plates (flat) and shells (curved) in addition to edges
Solid modelling is the most sophisticated method of representing an object, has volume suraces and edges simulates reality. The model represents interiror as well as exteriror
When would you use a solid model?
Stress analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow analysis. Simulates removal of material from an initial block
What does the Trim function do in CAD?
Trims a sketch curve to the nearest intersecting curve of boundary geometrically
What does extend function do in CAD?
Extends a sketch curve to the nearest intersecting curve of boundary geometrically
What does offesett function do in CAD
Copies the selected sketch curves a specifed distance from the original curves
What does the mirror function do in CAD?
Mirrors the selected sketch curves about a selected sketch line(y/x)
