What is DBD in organ donation?
Donation after Brain Death
Neuro exam consistent with brain death
Brain death declared by hospital physician
Organs tested/placed for transplant
Patient transferred to hospital OR and remains on ventilator with intact HR and BP until organs are recovered
What is DCD in organ donation?
Donation after Circulatory Death
Neuro exam not consistent with brain death; withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies planned
Organs tested/placed for transplant
Life-sustaining therapies withdrawn and comfort care ordered by hospital physician
Organs recovered in hospital OR after circulatory death declared by hospital physician
What is the RN responsibility in organ donation?
Maintain hemodynamic stability to ensure that donation remains an option
How much time do you have to Gift of Hope for a vent-dependent on-survivable illness, neurological injury?
1 hour
When should you call Gift of Hope immediately?
When a patient looses neurological reflexes
if the removal of life-sustaining therapy, including pressor support, is being considered and death is likely to occur
