Peristalsis
The contractions which propel food through the GI tract
Laxatives
Medication which promotes defecation ie meds to make you poop hehe
Enema
Fluid introduced to the rectum to cause evacuation of feces, administer nutrients and medication
Feces

Hemorrhoids
Veins which become distended from pressure during straining; result from pushing too hard
Dilated enlarged veins in the lining of the rectum: can be internal of external
Constipation
Results from too much water being absorbed when peristaltic contractions slow down. In the end a hard mass of stool forms. NOT A DISEASE
Defecation
Pooping hehe; when feces move from left colon to anus to rectum where sphincters relax resulting the the exit of feces
Diarrhea
Increase in passage of stools and liquid resulting in unformed feces
Flatulence
Excesive amounts of gas; Gas which accumulates in the lumen of the intestines causing the bowel wall to stretch and distend leading to abdominal fullness, pain, and cramping. Common if intestinal mobility is reduced b/c of opiates, general anesthetics, abdominal surgery, or immobilization.
Flatus
Gas passed through anus
Colon
Large intestine
Endoscopy
A procedure which uses a camera to inspect the upper part of the GI tract. Biopsy my be taken
Colostomy
Surgical opening called a stoma which brings part of the colon/large intestine through the abdominal wall. Temporary way to relieve area from trauma or perianal wounds
Ileostomy
Surgical opening called a stoma which brings part of the ileum (small intestine section of the three) through the abdominal wall. Temporary way to relieve area from trauma or perineal wounds
Fecal impaction
Hardened feces retained in the rectum which are unable to expel. A result on unrelieved constipation.
