GI Quiz 1 - Eso. Diverticula Flashcards
What is an Eso. Diverticula?
Outpouching of mucosa through the muscular layer of the Eso.
What are 3 types of Diverticula?
- Zenker’s/Pharyngeal Diverticula
- Midesophageal/Traction Diverticula
- Epiphrenic Diverticula
What is a Zenker’s divert.?
Pharyngeal diverticula that’s post. outpouching of mucosa & submucosa through cricopharyngeal mm
What is an Epiphrenic Divert.?
Just above diaphragm, usu. accompanies motility disorder (Achalasia &/ Spasm)
What causes Zenker’s vs. Midesophageal Divert?
Zenker’s: incoordination btwn phayngeal propulsions & cricopharyngeal relaxation
Mideso: traction from mediastinal inflammatory lesion, 2ndary by motility disorders
Which of the 3 diverticula typically has SSx Vs. asymptomatic?
Zenker’s = SSx
Mideso. & Epiphrenic = asymptomatic
What are the SSx of Zenker’s?
Fills w/food that might be regurg. when pt bends/lies down Aspiration pneumonitis (nocturnal regurg) RARE: lrg pouch -> dysphagia, palpable neck mass
What is the common workup for diverticula?
Videotaped barium swallow
What other Eso./Swallowing disorder could lead to Zenker’s Divert.?
Cricopharyngeal Incoordination
