Bowel perforation

What is an upper GI series?
Barium Swallow + upper GI imaging to watch barium course through the esophagus, stomach & duodenum
What is a small bowel follow through?
Following a barium swallow, XRs are taken at intervals to watch the barium go through the small intestine
What is a lower GI series? / Name 2 times it is contraindicated.
Barium enema / 1) Suspected bowel perf, 2) Acute ulcerative colitis.
Why is a lower GI series contraindicated in a patient with acute ulcerative colitis?
Can cause toxic megacolon
What is esophageal manometry? / What esophageal condition is it used to evaluate?
Measures pressure at lower and upper esophageal sphincter / achalasia
