GI Flashcards
MOA of bulk forming laxatives
polysaccharides that are converted into osmotically active metabolites that have the ability to draw water into the intestines –> increasing peristalsis
bulk forming laxative drugs
methylcellulose, polycarbophil
which type of laxative can also be used for diarrhea?
bulk forming laxatives
bulk forming laxatives AEs
flatulence
sensation of abd fullness
intestinal/esophageal obstruction
fecal impaction
surfactant laxatives MOA
emulsify fat and water in feces - NO EFFECT ON PERISTALSIS
surfactant laxative drugs
sodium/potassium/calcium docusate (colace)
surfactant laxatives AEs
bitter taste
diarrhea
throat irritation
mild, transient abd cramping
nursing implications for bulk forming laxatives
mix with 240 mL and drink immediately…it congeals
DM patients need to check sugar content
what drugs are H2 blockers
-tidine
H2 blockers MOA
block histamine2 receptors in the parietal cells of the stomach –> reduces volume of gastric juice and its H+ concentration
H2 blocker uses
gastric and duodenal ulcers GERD zollinger-ellison syndrome (hyper secretion of gastric acid --> peptic ulcers) aspiration pneumonitis heartburn, indigestion, sour stomach
H2 blockers AEs
elevation in gastric pH increase risk of pneumonia
H2 blockers patient teaching
take ranitidine and antacids 1 hr apart
take at bedtime
if no relief in 2 weeks –> seek medical attention
Cimetidine has what AE
can cause confusion in elderly
PPI drugs
-prazole
