Describe the characteristics of peptic ulcer pain
dull/burning
epigastric
relieved by eating
episodic => worse at night and waking patient up
Pancreatic pain characteristics
steady epigastric
reduced by leaning forward
radiation to the back
also vomiting
Biliary pain ‘coli’ characteristics
constant/severe
epigastric
lasts for hours
May become more sever and localised to upper quadrant with cholecystitis
renal colic characteristic
colic pain superimposed on constant pain
loin to groin
Bowel obstruction characteristics (pain)
colicky 2-3 min in small bowel and 10-15 in large bowel
also vomiting, constipation and abdominal distention
What signs of bowel obstruction can be recognized on examination
abdominal distension
List common causes of weight loss with increased nutrient intake
malabsorption
increased metabolic demand i.e. hyperthyrodism
List different types of diarrhoea
secretion => due to infection => secretion of fluids from the GI
Osmotic => large volume stool related to food intake i.e. lactose intolerance
abnormal intestinal motility i..e. IBS
Exudative due to colonic inflammation => small volume but frequent with blood and mucus
malabsorption => steatorrhoea, smelly. floaty
what is the treatment for TIA
clopidegrel => anti-platelet
what is glossitis and what is it attributed to
smooth, red, sore tongue due to iron, folate or B12 deficiency
What are the causes of abdominal distension
fat fluid fetus flatus (gas) feaces filthy tumour fantom pregnancy
