- epigastric pain pr dyspepsia
- hunger liek growling, gnawling, dull, aching pain
- relieved by antacid or food
- epigastric tenderness
- ages: 25-50 y.o.

What is GERD?
A
- gastroesophageal reflux disease
- presence of chronic symptoms w/ or w/o mucosal damage (40%)
- occurs from abd reflux into esophagus
- increases risk for carcinoma of the esophagus

- neutralize stomach acid amd reduce symptoms of heartburn

- used to relieve heartburn

A
- contraindicated in pts with CKF d/t risk of hypercalcemia

- OTC weak bases
- Base (OH)3 or CO3 + Al, Ca, or Mg
- Al(OH)3, CaCO3, Mg salts (hydroxide, trisilicate), Al and Mg combination
- Al(OH)3 + Mg(OH)2 = Maalox
- Al(OH)3 + Mg(OH)2 + simethicone (Mylanta)
- MOA: Antacid + HCl -> salt + water
- Sodium bicarbonate: seldom used
