Cullen’s sign
ecchymosis around umbilicus

Grey-Turner’s sign
ecchhymosis of lower abdomen, FLANK, or back
indicates abdominal or retriperitoneal hemorrhage
hypoactive BS
< 5 sounds/minute
normoactive
5-35 sounds/minute
hyperactive
> 35 sounds per minute, every 2-3 seconds
venous hum
indicates increased collateral circulation between the portal and venous system
friction run
sounds like rubbing sandpaper
fluid wave tests
tests for presence of ascites
have pt place hand vertically midline below umbilicus
place hands on sides of abdomen, tap each side, feel for fluid shift and bounce
rebound tenderness exam
slowly deeply palpate RLQ McBurney’s point, ask if hurts more when push in or release

Murphy’s sign
gallbladder (R costal margin) palpation and ask to inspire
if they halt breathing /pain mid inspiration it is positive Murphy’s sign
may indicate acute cholecystitis
obturator muscle test
have patient lie flat, flex R hip and knee. support their leg below knee and on ankle.
rotate leg internally and externally - pain in lower abdomen is positive sign
may indicate ruptured appendix/pelvic infection
Rovsing sign
palpation in LLQ causes pain in RLQ
may indicate acute appendicitis
abdominal pain red flags
worst ever, ripping, tearing
fever

hematochezia or hematemesis
