GI Flashcards
Digestion
Biochemical Breakdown Process
Absorption
The process that transfers small absorbable units with water, electrolytes, vitamins from GI lumen into the blood and lymph.
Motility
Muscular contractions
Motility
Store, mix, and move foward contents
Motility
means muscular contractions. When we eat, the food needs to be broken down into small pieces and mixed, stored, and moved forward, the food we eat can be digested and absorbed. Motility refers to the muscular contractions that mix and move forward of the contents in the GI tract.
Gi Secretion
7L/Day which come from plasma
Total Volume of Plasma
3.5 L
Secretion
Water mucus, electrolytes (such as HCL), enzymes, and bile salts
Digestive accessory organs
Salivary glands, exocrine pancreas, liver, and gallbladder
Small Intestine Secretes
Mucus and Salt
Small intestine Digest
Lumen - pancreatic enzymes, bile, carb, and protein digestion
Brush border - carb and protein digestion
Small Intestine Absorbtion
Nutrients, electrolytes, and water
Large intestine Absorbtion
Salt and water converting contents to feces
Liver Secretion
Bile salts, alkaline, and bilirubin
Liver Digestion
Bilt facilitates fat digestion and absorbtion in duodenal lumen
Exocrine Pancreas Secretion
Trypsin, ehymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase, amylase, lipase, pancreatic aqueous NAHCO2
Exocrine pancreas Digest
pancreatic enzymes accomplish digestion in duodenal lumen
Pharynx and Esophagus Motility
Swallowing
Pharynx and Esophagus Secretion
Mucus
Mouth and Salivary Glands Motility
Chewing
Mouth and Salivary Glands Secretion
Saliva - Amylase, mucus, lysozyme
Mouth and Salivary Glands Digestion
