Dickens uses vivid language to create a sense of dread and foreboding around this ghost
“…a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him”
The ghost is silent. It doesn’t speak at all but it is the most haunting in appearance. Dickens shows a ‘solemn’ and spooky spirit in the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
“Scrooge feared the silent shape so much that his legs trembled beneath him, and he found that he could hardly stand when he prepared to follow it.”
The ghost fills Scrooge with terror. The presence of this ghost makes Scrooge afraid. His trembling legs and inability to stand firm show how he is worried about the future that the ghost will show him.
“Still the Ghost pointed with an unmoved finger to the head.”
The ghost points wherever he wants Scrooge to look and does not move until he obeyed. It silently demands that Scrooge pays attention. The spirit’s silence is unrelenting.
“The spirit stored among the graves, and pointed down to One.”
The ghost is demanding Scrooge shutdown and he will not stop until Scrooge obeys.
“Still the Ghost pointed downward to the grave by which it stood.”
Scrooge needs to figure it out for himself. The motive of the hand appears again.
“The kind hand trembled”
Represents the future changing it is a disruption.
“Kind” - assuring the reader he is good.
“ he caught the spectral hand”
Defying fate and rewriting the future. Scrooge is taking hold of the future.
“It was shrouded in a deep black garment”
It symbolises death and the unknown also it links to the “the Phantom slowly gravely silently approached”
