• 1st Sep 1938: Nazi Germany invaded Poland
• 3rd Sep 1939: Britain and France declare war on Germany
• the occupation an alternative for the Nazi policy regarding the jews
• the Nazis also needed to decide what to do with the 2 million Jews living in Poland
• Sep 1939 it was decreed that Polish Jews should be concentrated in towns and cities to solve the ‘jewish problem’
• they were confined to certain distructs and in the spring of 1940 walls were built around these areas, creating ghettos and sealing them off from the rest of society
