What are the requirements for driving in Ontario? (Residents) (2+1)
Residents must be:
*at least 16 years old
*have a valid Ontario driver’s license.
(New residents to Ontario with a valid driver’s license from another province state or country can use if for 60 days after moving to Ontario.)
What are the requirements for driving in Ontario for visitors? (2+1)
Visitors to Ontario must:
*be at least 16 years old
*have a valid driver’s licence from their own province, state or country.
(If they are visiting for more than 3 months, you need an International Driver’s Permit from their own country.)
What types of vehicles are you allowed to drive under a G-class license?
Allowed to drive:
* any car, van or small truck or combination of vehicle and towed vehicle up to 11,000kg provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600kg.
(A pickup truck towing a house trailer exceeds 4,600kg, but the total combined weight of the truck and trailer does not exceed 11,000kgs is deemed a Class G).
What types of vehicles are you allowed to drive under a G1 class license?
Level One of graduated licensing. *Holders may drive drive Class G vehicles with an accompanying fully licensed driver with at least 4 years ‘ driving experience. (Subject to certain conditions)
What types of vehicles are you allowed to drive under a G2 class license?
*You can drive class G vehicles without an accompanying driver but are still subject to certain conditions (any car, van or small truck or combination of vehicle or towed vehicle up to 11,000 kg)
How many classes of licenses are there in Ontario?
12 different classes. Each one qualifies you to drive a different type of vehicle. The class of license must match the type of vehicle you are driving. You must have a Class G license before you can be licensed to drive any other type of vehicle. The only exception is motorcycles.
How long does it take to complete Ontario’s graduated licensing system?
The two-step licensing program takes at least 20-months to complete.
How many road tests must you pass to become fully licensed?
2 road tests.
What do you need to apply for your license? (3)
*Show proof of your legal name, date of birth, and signature. Documents must be original and valid.
*Bring documents to a DriveTest Centre or Travel Point
*Pay a fee. Includes the cost of the knowledge test, your first road test, and a five-year licensing fee.
What rules apply to a Level One/Class G1 driver? (8)
*Your blood-alcohol level must be 0.
*A G-driver, with at least 4-years of experience must sit in the front-seat
*They must have have a blood alcohol level of less than .05%
*Their license may have demerit points but it cannot be suspended.
*Each person in the vehicle must have a working seat belt.
*You must not drive on 400-series highways with a posted speed limit over 80km/h.
*You must not drive on certain high-speed roads including the QEW, DVP, and Gardiner Expressway in the GTA, the EC Row Expressway in Windsor, and the Conestoga Parkway in Kitchener-Waterloo. (If your accompanying driver is an instructor you may drive on any road)
*You must not drive between 12am-5am
How long does Level One last?
12 months
What rules apply to a Level Two/Class G2 driver?
*Your blood-alcohol level must be 0.
*Each person in the vehicle must have a working seat belt.
The following restrictions apply between the hours of 12am-5am to G2 drivers aged 19 years and under:
- In the first 6 months after receiving your G2 license, you are allowed to carry only 1 passenger aged 19 or under.
- After 6 months with your G2 license and until you obtain your full G license or turn 20, you are allowed to carry up to 3 passengers aged 19 and under.
Exceptions:
* Restrictions for G2 drivers aged 19 and under do not apply if you are accompanied by a fully-licensed driver in the front passenger seat, or if the passengers are members of your immediate family.
How long does Level One last?
At least 12 months.
