What is the difference between a main path and a sub-path?

A

Main paths are logical groupings of inputs, inserts, or busses e.g. Out 1-2 (stereo bus mapped to the main hardware outputs). A sub-path represents a signal path within a main path e.g. a default stereo input path consists of two mono sub-paths (left and right).
