4.1 benign prostatic hyperplasia
Symptoms:
• chronic urinary retention
• difficulty initiating urination
• a weak urine stream
• difficulty fully emptying the bladder
• frequent need to urinate
referral:
symptoms
• present for less than 3 months
• dysuria, haematuria, cloudy urine in past
3 months
• fever
interacting medicines
• alpha-1 blockers
medical conditions
• postural hypotension
• heart, kidney or liver problems
• uncontrolled diabetes
• urinary incontinence
• previous prostate surgery
• undiagnosed blurred/clouding vision
• scheduled for glaucoma or cataract
OTC products: POM TO P
• tamsulosin (flomax relief)
• men 45-75 years supply criteria
1. symptoms >3 months
2. initially give a 2 week supply
3. give a further 4 week supply if there is
improvement after 14 days of starting
how to take:
• one 400mcg capsule swallowed whole
after the same meal each day
side effects:
• drowsiness, dizziness - sit or lie down
Advice:
• after 6 weeks - see the doctor to
confirm if it is appropriate to
continue
• every 12 months - see doctor for a
review to enable further OTC supply • does not increase risk of prostate
cancer
