What do you know about background of Fritz Perls’ gestalt therapy?

A

Fritz Perls(1893-1970)

Perls’ aproach to human development and personality is influenced by many different aspects of his own biography, psychoanalysis and the Zeitgeist we was raised in and lived in.

Leading gestalt psychologists, existential philosophers and psychoanalyst during his years spent in Germany.

Psychoanalysis sits on the bottom of his ideological foundations, which he took it as a reaction reference.

What do you know about Fritz Perls’ life?

A

1893-1970

At the age of 18, he started to be trained in the Deutsches Theater under Reinhardt’s direction who is referred by Perls as his “first creative genius”
There he learned how to observe ones expresses emotions through voice and gestures.

1930 he married Laura PosnerPerls, who had training in dance and existential philosophy

1934 he had to move from Germany, first to South Africa where he also served in the army

What do you know about Fritz Perls’ personality development theory?

A

“Self” exists z.B. differentiating his/her self from the other and by connecting/relating the self to the other

Self is relational and existential

There is a boundary between the self and other and the environment which is flexible, and self regulated and allows the self to be autonomous

Problems occur when the self can not regulate and come into contact with others and his environmentaccording to his/her needs
