Gesalt laws of perceptual organization Flashcards
Gestalt Psychology
Focuses on how people interpret the world
The following are fundamental principles from the founders of Gestalt psychology
Law of similarity
Elements that have similar visual appearances seem to be more related
Elements can be visually grouped together if they have visual similarities
It’s possible to create similarity using size, color and shape
Law of common region
Elements tend to be perceived in groups if they are sharing an area with a clearly defined boundary
By adding borders or a background around an element (or a group of elements) you separate it from surrounding elements
Figure-Ground Effect
Humans ability to visually separate objects on different layers of focus
We can see which things are placed in the foreground and background
Modal pop-ups are an example of the figure ground effect
Material design uses the Z-axis for elevation
Law of proximity
Objects that are near each other seem to be grouped together
Place related objects close to each other to create a connection
Law of continuity
Objects connected by straight or curving lines are seen in a way that follows the m smoothest path
Guide the users eyes by creating a visual connection between items. This makes the items easier to scan and comprehend
Law of closure
Our brains tend to fill in gaps in information
