What is geriatrics?
A branch of medicine that deals with problems and diseases of the aged.

Name two forms of ischemic optic neuropathy
AAION due to GCA: very severe. Can go blind in hours; days.
NAAION - ischemic infarction. not as severe.
Symptoms for GCA
Headache
Polymyalgia rheumatic (neck, torso, shoulder, pelvic pain)
Fever
Weakness, malaise, fatigue.
What is acrochordon?
Skin tags
Benign - may be associated with hormone imbalances.
What is senile keratosis (actinic keratosis)
Flat, red plaque becomes yellow-brown, thick, scaly
In sun-exposed areas.
Potential to form squamous cell carcinoma.
Seborrheic keratosis?
Raised, oval plaque usually on face or trunk.
Starts yellowish, becomes brown/black
BENIGN
Herpes Zoster
Re-activation of virus, attacks sensory nerves, and skin
Usually 1-2 weeks, can be much longer.
Basal cell carcinoma
Most common form of skin cancer. 80% of all skin cancers. 90% of lid cancers
Usually not malignant
Squamous cell carcinoma
Much less common, often malignant
More common in sun-exposed areas.
Wart-like nodule with small reddened areas, may ulcerate.
Malignant melanoma
Highly malignant
Usually develops from pre-existing mole.
