Gero 6 Flashcards
Reliability
Refers to the consistency pr precision of measurement, and the extent to which it eliminates chance in resulting scores
Remote memory
typically refers to memory for the distant past, measured on the order of years or even decades. It encompasses episodic (autobiographical), personal semantic, and general semantic memory involving historical people and events.
Research grant
To support a specific research endeavor programmatic grants: in general, a project grant is given to support a specific, connected set of activities, with a beginning and an end, explicit objectives and predetermined cost. when a funder gives a grant for a specific project, it is generally a restricted grant and must be used for that project
Reserve capacity
Refers to the individual’s resources for responding effectively to challenging conditions. As the reserve capacity is lessened as we age, behavioral implications can occur such as slowness with regard to talking in, processing, and acting on information, greater stress impact, and a disrupted homeostatic equilibrium.
Respite care
Services specifically designed to provide a temporary, but periodic or routine, relief to the primary caregiver of an individual who is incapacitated or dependent due to frailty or physical disability. Can include home based care, adult daycare, skilled nursing care, and short-term institutional care.
Retirement
Voluntary or forced withdrawal of a person from active participation in a job or business. Includes bridge employment, partial retirement, exit of workforce
Retirement communiteis
Residential areas with age as a condition of residence. Can range from small mobile home parks to large mixed house complexes
Reversible dementias
Pseudodementia, delirium medically induced, medication induced
Role theory
According to role theory, retirement is an adjustment of one’s principal role usually s a paid worker, a role that is central to a person’s identity (Kim & Moen, 2001). Roles give people a sense of worth and achievement (Choi, 2001) and help shape their behavior and self-concept (Hooyman & Kiyak, 2000). Further, role theory suggests that retirement can be a stressful event for individuals due to the loss of a fundamental social role. Learning to deal with role loss may cause individuals to feel a sense of vulnerability.
Sandwich generation
The generation of adults who are full-time employees, parents, and caregivers for their parents. This is less than 8% of the current generation. 1 in 8 adults ages 40-60 fall into this category.
Sarcopenia
Decrease in muscle mass, increases fatigue, fragility, major risk factor for falling Makes ADLs more diffcicult
Scales of measurement
Scales of measurement refer to ways in which variables/numbers are defined and categorized. Each scale of measurement has certain properties which in turn determines the appropriateness for use of certain statistical analyses. The four scales of measurement are nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio.
Scientific method
Define the problem - state hypotheses Define the population Assign participants to treatment groups Measure the dependent variable (DV) Collect data Analyze data Draw conclusion Make inferences
Section 8 Housing Voucher Program
A rent assistance program funded by the Federal government through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Vouchers are provided directly to eligible households. Recipients pay 30% of their income in rent and the voucher subsidizes the remaining rental cost.
Selecitve dropout
Attrition or mortality; the loss of participants due to the fact that they are no longer able to participate due to moving, death, illness or simply do not want to participate anymore.
