Medical profession that specializes in how the body of an older adult has aged differently compared to a younger person. They can help with illnesses, medications, and mental health of older adults specifically.
Geriatrics
The medical specialty dealing with the problems and diseases of the elderly.
Gerontology
The scientific study of age, aging and the aged. The study includes aspects of social, psychological, and physical/biological spheres of aging.
Gerontologist
Health care professionals who specialize in the filed of aging related dimensions of change over the lifespan. They provide their services to people in universities, hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizen centers and the community They are responsible for educating other health professionals, community practioners, as well as the community at large about the process of aging and how to age well.
Gerontophobia
Morbid fear or dislike of older persons. The fear is a by product of the high value contemporary American society puts on youth. It touches all facets of life, form physical appearance to the fear of death. This attitude has been internalized by many people, old and young.
Glaucoma
Silent theft of sight An increase of intraocular pressure on the eye when intraocular fluid does not drain properly. A progressive optic neurophathy and visual field loss and optic nerve damage. Risk factors - over 60, ethnicity (African Americans 5x as likely to get), diabetes, hypothyroidism Treatment - laser surgery

Disease of faulty metabolism in which there are deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints and increased amounts of uric acid in the blood
Group home
A congregate setting licensed by DMHMRSAS which provides supervision in a community-based homelike dwelling for residents with mental retardation or other development disabilities who need assistance, counseling and training in ADLs.
Guardian
An individual appointed by a court of law to manager a person’s financial and/or personal affairs due to the fact that the court has found the person to be incompetent to manage their own affairs. A protective arrangement to the benefit of the incapable individual.
HCBS - Home and Community Bases Services
Non-medical services provided to older people still living in their own homes. Designed to promote independence. Services include adult day care, home health care (ADLs), homemaker, personal care (meal prep, housekeeping)

Medical model: focus on the treatment of disease and injury with physicians in charge of care Social mode: focus on the social and medical services to treat disease and its attendant influences with the patient within a collaborative, interprofessional experience Holistic model: focus on health rather then disease, including emphasis on prevention and collaboration between self and proefessionals

Herpes Zoster Shingles
Acute viral infections caused by virus that causes chicken pox. Once you have it you can have this for life. May stay dormant in nerve endings. Appears as fluid filled lesions causing itching and burning.
