Gero 26 Flashcards
Cellular theory
Non-stocastic (effects have a clear relationship between exposure and effect) Theory that argues that aging ultimately results from the progressive weakening of capacity for cell division, perhaps through exhaustion of the genetic material. Hayflick limit: is the finite number of cell divisions that normal human cells in tissue cutlure go through (50+/-10)
Chronic disease prevalence
Chronic diseases are leading cause of death and disability in the US - 7 out of 10 deaths each year heart disease, cancer, stroke cause 50% of all deaths yearly
Chronological age
Age in years or numbers, the number of calendar years a person is Based solely on the passage of time
Civic engagement
Individual or collective action designed to address a public concern or on unmet human, educational, health care, environmental or public safety need Benefits - well being, life satisfaction, self esteem, sense of control, physical health, depression, longevity
Classic conditioning
Classical conditioning theory involves learning a new behavior via the process of association. In simple terms two stimuli are linked together to produce a new learned response in a person or animal. John Watson proposed that the process of classical conditioning (based on Pavlov’s observations) was able to explain all aspects of human psychology.
CLEAR
Symptoms of medication related problems: Cognitive changes Loss of bladder or bowel control Eating or appetite changes Activity or energy changes Recurrent falls
Code of Ethics
Highlights that you are in a special type of group that is given societal privileges, but with these privileges come the responsibility to conduct yourself in ways that are acceptable not only to members of your own group, but also to the larger society. Ex: Hippocratic oath taken by health professionals
Cognitive function/cognitive aging
Cognitive ageing is the decline in cognitive processing that occurs as people get older. Age-related impairments in reasoning, memory and processing speed can arise during adulthood and progress into the elder years.
Cognitive interventions
A general description for a variety of therapeutic approaches, all designed to address psychological problems at the cognitive (conscious mind) level, through the activation and analysis of thoughts, experiences, memories, and senses. By drawing attention to what is going on in their minds, therapists can enlist the patients’ help in finding solutions that will be effective and permanent.
Commodificaiton of old age
“Commodification” of old age relates to services and goods that are bought or sold. What Estes and Associates (2001) call the aging enterprise—pension programs and businesses focused on older people—further serves to differentiate older from younger adults through the use of age thresholds and programs that effectively “commodify” old age. Commercial efforts amplified in the mass media create age groups and cultures as “cultural fields,” such as the youth culture, a set of products and practices of young people (especially related to their leisure and buying of goods and services; see Capuzzo, 2001) that continue to define the beliefs and behavior of the large Boomer cohort.
Comorbidity
Concurrent health conditions; occurs when an individual is affected by several diseases simultaneously
Comparative anatomy
The study of the structure of different species helps us understand the differences in aging and lifespan across species
Congestive heart failure
Occurs when the heart is unable to pump adequate blod and oxygen to the body tissues Shortness of breath, wheezing 2/3 of people with CHF are over 65
Congregate meal
Free or low cost, nutritionally sound meals served five days a week in an easily accessible location Meal programs also provide daily activities and socialization for participants
Conflict of interest
A conflict of interest is a situation in which an individual has competing interests or loyalties. Conflicts of interest involve dual relationships; one person in a position in one relationship and a relationship in another situation. A conflict of interest can exist in many different situations.
