Germination Flashcards
1
Q
Give the definition of Germination.
A
Where the seed starts to grow
2
Q
Give three conditions the seed needs before germination can start.
A
Water
Oxygen
Temperature
3
Q
Why does a seed need water, oxygen and a suitable temperature to grow?
A
Water- to activate the enzymes that break down the food reserves in the seed.
Oxygen- for respiration
Temperature- for the enzymes inside the seed to work.
4
Q
1. Water, grow 2. down, soil 3. shoot 4. leaves
Give 4 steps of germination
A
- The seed takes in water and starts to grow using its store of energy.
- The first root starts to grow down into the soil.
- The shoot grows up
- Finally, extra roots grow and the first green leaves appear.
5
Q
Give three steps of how germinating seeds get energy from food stores.
A
- A developed seed contains an embryo and a store of food reserved, wrapped in a hard seed coat.
- When a seed starts to germinate, it gets glucose for respiration from its own food store.
- Once the plant has grown enough to produce green leaves, it can get its own food for energy from photosynthesis.
