Terms under the Rhineland Pact
- Germany, France and Belgium promised to respect western frontiers ( respect their existing borders )
- Germany agreed to keep its troops out of the Rhineland, as demanded at Versailles
- Britain and Italy promised to aid Germany, France or Belgium if they were attacked by its neighbours.
Terms under the Arbitration treaties
Germany agreed with France, Belgium, Poland and Czechoslovakia the any disputes should be settled by a conciliation committee to mediate discussions ( agreed to settle disputes peacefully )
The Rhineland Pact and the Arbitration treaties were usually known as what collectively ?
Known as the Locarno Pact
Impact of the Locarno Pact ?
- meant that Germany was no longer a diplomatically isolated power.
- made Germany’s position in Europe stronger as it prevented any more invasions.
- major triumph in improved relations as Germany recognised borders imposed at Versailles and accepted the loss of Alsace - Lorraine.
Similarities between the USSR and Germany ?
- Both countries had been defeated in the war and had suffered from punitive peace treaties.
- Both Germany and USSR treated as ‘ outcasts ‘ and were not allowed to join the League of Nations.
- Both felt the existence of an independent Poland with French guarantees was a threat to their security.
What did the similarities between the USSR and Germany lead to ?
Led to a closer working relationship with Russia.
Terms of the Treaty of Repallo ?
- diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored
- Germany and the USSR continued economic and trade cooperation
- All outstanding claims for compensation of war damage was dropped
- Germany allowed to develop weapons and train pilots in Russia.
Impact of the Treaty of Repallo ?
- For Germany, it was an important but symbolic step away from post war isolation
- France, especially, were angered by this treaty as it showed Germany’s intention to get around the disarmament terms of the ToV
In April 1926 Germany and the USSR renewed their earlier treaty in the Treaty of Berlin, added one agreement what was it ?
Germany would remain neutral if the USSR were involved in a war, unless they were the aggressors.
Impact of Germany admittance League of Nations ?
- Germany not domestically isolated
- Before being admitted, Germany were alone and everyone was hostile and cautious of them.
- sign of Germany’s reintegration into the European fold as an equal power
- diplomatic triumph which strengthened Germany’s international position.
Why were the French reluctant to withdraw occupying forces ?
- concerned for their own security
- suspicious of Germany’s willingness to comply with ToV

When was the removal of the remaining allied forces
Once the Young Plan had been agreed by Germany, as it depended on the settlement of the reparations issue.
They were withdrawn from Zone 2 in 1929 and Zone 3 in 1930.
