Why does Germany utilize Training and Pruning?
Vineyards planted on slopes are usually head-trained, individually staked and cane tied in at the top to maximize the grapes’ exposure to light and air circulation.
It prevents Humidity and disease.
How do rivers assist in growing grapes in Germany?
Sunlight reflects off of rivers and help ripen grapes and the air movement created by the river helps protect against spring frosts.
Why does harvest timing matter?
Because wines are classified by the level of sugar in the must weight, the harvest is often spread out over a number of weeks and months, to make it possible to make a range of wines. Pickers will pass through the vineyard several times to ensure that they get the ideal grapes for each category of wine, which includes selecting individual botrytis-affected berries within bunches. This extended harvest period is similar to Alsace.
