Any grape variety red or white

A category within qualitasweine with a higher grape must weight. (Sweeter)

Kabinett - dry to medium sweet
Spatlese - dry to medium sweet
Auslese - dry to sweet
Beernauslese - sweet only
Eiswein - sweet only
Trockenbeernauslese - sweet only
What is sussreserve?
This is when unfermented grape juice is added to wine to increase sugar levels. This doesn’t produce high quality wines
What are the characteristics of Kabinett?
When dry - Lighter body, high acidity, floral 12% alcohol,

Made the same was as Kabinett, slightly fuller bodied, richer more concentrated flavours stone fruit flavours
Higher alcohol level and sweetness
What are the characteristics of auslese?
Made from individually selected ripe grape bunches
Richer and riper compared to spatlese
Noble rot plate important role
What are the characteristics of beernauslese and trockenbeernauslese?
Noble rot is essential to get this high level of sweetness for TBA but not for BA
Sweet low in alcohol with flavours of honey apricot dried stone fruit
What are the key factors when making Eiswein?
The winemaker will try to keep flavours as close to the varietal norms as possible. No malolactic conversion, old oak, using carefully selected yeast.
What is Grosses Gewach?
It’s an appellation with strict regulations.
Wines have to be dry and from a single vineyard
What is VDP wines?
An unofficial producers association which have their own vineyards and appellation usually from the best vineyards in the 13 regions
What identifiers do VDP wine bottles have to let buyers know they are one?
Eagle on the bottle with GG if it’s a GG wine with the vineyard name

Second most planted grape in Germany, ripens early, attractive floral and fruity. Not that high quality fern really

Rheinhessen and franken
What are the key features of silvaner?
Earthy, less acidic and fruity than Riesling
