German Boy Flashcards
role
-captured by Raleigh during the raid that results in Osborne being killed. cost of their lives-was it worth it for a small human child?
-him crying and begging for mercy brings out the futility of war as how can such a child be a pose for danger
-raid was a success but at what cost…we never see him again
-the humour in his pleading is ironic as he begs for his life as some are already lost, and clamours over the smallest thing-coping mechanisms like everyone-he is a human and he loves
futility/humanity
-‘let-me-please-keep-that’ ([pg 75) the dashes create an abrupt and pausing rhythm showing how due to his English, emphasising his difficulty in speaking but also how he wants his oddments as shown with the melody created-as its dear to him-making him more humane ad also symbolises the distance between them though he likes oddments too
-‘the boy sobs hysterically’ all the propaganda just like Raleigh said reduces him to a child sobbing connotates baby like and innocence making these big bad people behind the trenches just human
-‘bows stiffly to the colonel’ (pg 75) act of bowing respect, stiffly adverb emphasises its unnatural and not relaxed, making this show of respect silly in the big scheme of things.
