Gerald Croft Flashcards
Gerald croft is…
Respectable: “The easy well-bred young man-about-town”
Upper-class: :Landed people and so forth”
A lair: “I wasn’t telling you a complete lie”
Traditions: “I should say so!” (Gerald agreeing with Birling)
He thinks he has done nothing wrong:
He claims Eva “Didn’t blame me at all” so perhaps at first the audience agrees to begin with
Although he “made her happy for a time” he left her when it suited him rendering her practically homeless
Is Gerald bad or good?
Very difficult question Priestley portrays him as both
Gerald does try and do the right thing
He is also able to separate his public image from his secrets and private acts - something Eric doesn’t get the hang of
