Gerald Croft Flashcards
Gerald proves he hasn’t changed at all at the end through this quote.
He offers sheila the engagement ring back suggesting he wants to forget everything that happened and go on as normal.
•Expects Sheila to agree and pretend the whole ordeal with the inspector never happened.
He learns nothing from the story
“What about this ring?”
The word “and” shows words spill out as he had so much to say about Eva
because he was intimate with her.
He knows her in a positive light unlike
Sheila, he knows Eva’s feelings and emotions.
“intensely grateful” proves he also looks down on lower class and only knows how to give and help in finance terms.
“She was young and pretty and warm hearted- and intensely grateful.”
Realisation hits him and though he doesn’t eventually end up taking responsibility he realises his mistakes.
He shouts as he realises the extent of what has happened to a girl he was with on an intimate level is dead due to him.
Pauses show how he needs time to make sense of the situation.
“My God-I-well, I’ve suddenly realised, taken it I’m properly-that she’s dead”
Gets on easily with people he’s self confident and assured.
Demonstrates an upper class front as he expects to be respected by others around the area.
Has not achieved his status proving he is nothing but a “young man about town.”
Spoilt, indulgent and unjustly arrogant.
“Easy, well-need young man about town.”
Openly admits he had no real feelings for Eva but used her for a sexual relationship and kept her as a mistress.
Priestley wants to show how upper class take what they wanted regardless of the impact in others or emotional toil it could take.
Remorseless/vain- does not regret actions, or feel truly sorry for how he treated Eva sees himself as heroic as He rescued Eva and have her money (sexist.)
“I didn’t feel about her as she felt about me.”
