His appearance suggests intelligence and strength, but there is also an underlying sense of unease in his “restless eyes.”

George is very modest - but also can be very complimentary to Lennie, especially if it means getting a job.

“I ain’t got no people… I seen the guys that go around the ranches on their own… after a long time they get mean.”
George appears to be driven by a fear of loneliness - and wants to protect Lennie from it too.

“If I was alone I could live so easy.”
It costs George an awful lot to look after Lennie, but he is a man of his word so refuses to give up.
“Y k a f C, L.”
“You keep away from Curley, Lennie.”
George seems to be very good at sensing danger and judging character. He also wants to protect Lennie.
“L o t f t l”
“Live off the fatta the lan’”
George and Lennie intend to buy themselves a lot and go self sufficient. Perhaps it is a sanity mechanism for the two of them.
“W w a g, t w y w”
“Whatever we ain’t got, that’s what you want.”
George isn’t afraid to complain to Lennie when he is needy.
“I h w a t t.”
“In hot water all the time.”
George admits to feeling slightly on-edge whenever he is with Lennie as they always seem to end up in trouble.
“G k u t e o a a w.”
” Got kinda used to each other after a while.”
George explains to Slim how they started to travel around together.
“I t I k w n d h.”
“I think I knowed we’d never do her.”
Towards the end of the novel, George implies he was slightly doubtful about the dream the whole time. Perhaps this is true and he made it up to try and appease Lennie, or maybe this is him admitting defeat.
“I w y t s h w m.”
“I want you to stay here with me.”
George convinces Lennie to stay with him at the end just before he shoots him. He is always very indirect but also caring towards Lennie.
