Georgaphy Natural Hazards Flashcards
Hazard risk
Probability that a hazard will take place
Natural hazard
A natural even that threatens people (earth quakes ,volcanic eruption, tropical storm, flood)
Earth quake
Sudden movement with in earths crust followed by a series of shocks
immediate responses
Reaction of people as disaster happens
Monitoring
Recording physical changes to help forecast next natural hazards
Long-term responses
Later reactions after events
Plate margin
Boundary between 2 tectonic plates
Planning
Actions taken to help communities respond to and recover from natural disasters (emergency evacuation)
Prediction
Forecast based on current knowledge (done for tropical storms and volcanic eruptions less reliable for earth quakes)
Primary effects
Initial impacts of a natural event (building collapsing)
Protection
Actions taken to reduce impact (building design - rubber shock absorbers)
Secondary effects
The after effects occur as indirect impacts of a natural event (fires due to gas mains braking due to earth quakes)
Tectonic hazard
Natural hazard caused by movement of tectonic plates
Tectonic plate
Earths crust that floats on heavier maltern rock (Continental less dense but thicker than oceanic)
Volcano
Opening in earth crust where lava erupts.
