16
Q

What is surplus value to Simmel?

A

The value of any object for which money might be exchanged PLUS the value of free choice that money itself provides.

17
Q

What is the surplus value of wealth?

A

The idea that wealthy people enjoy advantages beyond what their money can do.

18
Q

What is reification to Simmel?

A

Reification is how objective culture becomes external to and coercive of individuals

19
Q

What is rationalization to Simmel?

A

Money reducing quality to quantity, increasing intellectuality and decreasing irrational aspects of life

20
Q

What does money have to do with rationalization?

A

People become impersonal, reduced (human value = dollars), cynical and blase. Overspecialization increases isolation.

21
Q

Why are secrets important to relationships?

A

Excessive self revelation makes things uninteresting, and there is nothing unexpected.

22
Q

How do secrets form?

A

Someone is hiding something that another person WANTS to know. Since larger groups have more differences, secrets are more likely.

23
Q

What were some criticisms of Simmel?

A
  • Do forms really exist as he saw them?
  • Social structure can’t be just a form of interaction AND external to and coercive to individuals
  • No critical theory
  • No coherent theory—he was a little all over the place
