Geophysical Hazards General Flashcards
Hazard
A human or natural event with the potential to cause damage to people or place
Hazard Event
The occurrence of a hazard, which actually impacted people or place
Disaster
A major hazard event, causing significant damage including loss of life
Risk
The probability of a hazard event causing damage or harmful consequences
Vulnerability
The susceptibility of a community to a hazard or the impacts of a hazard event
Hazard Perception
The degree to which a hazard is considered to be a threat by different people
Primary Hazard
An initial hazard possibly causing secondary hazards
Secondary Hazard
A hazard happening as an effect or consequence of a first initial hazard
Resilience
The ability to protect lives, livelihoods and infrastructure from destruction, and the ability to recover after a hazard event
Adaption
Ways in which human activities and actions are altered to take into account the increasing risk of hazards
Geophysical Systems
A complex set of interrelated and interactive geographic structures
Describe the global distribution of volcanoes or earthquakes
Concentrated around pacific ring of fire
Along plate margins
Southern Europe/Mediterranean
East African rift valley
Constructive plate boundary
Also called divergent
2 plates moving away from each other, forming volcanoes as magma wells up, constructing new crust
Destructive plate boundary
Also called convergent plate boundary or subduction zone
An oceanic and continental plate push into each other, forcing the heavier oceanic plate underneath the lighter continental plate
Conservative plate boundary
2 plates slide past each other either in opposite directions, or in the same direction but at different speeds
The friction and shocks caused by sudden release create earthquakes
