Geomorphology Flashcards
What is geomorphology?
the science concerned with the form of the land surface and the processes which created it
Are landscaped static or dynamic?
All landscapes are dynamic
List 3 key driving forces in geomorphology
Gravitational force
Shearing force
Lift and buoyancy
List 2 key resisting forces
Gravitational
Intrinsic strength
How is weight calculated ?
W = mass x gravity is
Describe action of resisting forces on steep slopes?
More force is making it roll down hill rather than keeping the object on the slope
What is critical shear stress in liquids
The point at which shear stress is sufficient to enable movement of particles
Describe shear stress
Force between a moving object and a stationary object
A force exerted by the shearing action if a mass moving across a surface
Name 4 factors which shear stress is dependent on
Gravity
Density of fluid
Depth of flow
Slope
Describe the action of resisting forces on shallow slopes
Resisting force dominate, more gravitational force holding it to the slope than pulling it down
